About Us

Van Cooten’s Howard Drapery

A Fraser Coast favourite since 1952.

For more than 70 years, Van Cooten’s Howard Drapery has been a place where creativity, community and good old-fashioned service come together. Whether you’re a seasoned patchworker, a curious beginner or just passing through Howard, you’ll find a warm welcome, friendly faces and a store filled with inspiration.

We’re proud to be a true destination store - the kind of place people drive hours to visit - and we love helping customers discover fabrics, gifts and treasures they didn’t even know they were looking for

Our Story

Van Cooten’s Drapery was first opened in 1952 by Mr Fred Woods. What began as a small local drapery quickly became a much-loved part of the Howard community. Over the decades, the store has continued to grow, evolve and serve new generations of makers, families and travellers.

Mr Trevor Whitby

In 1977, the business was purchased by Mr L.A. (Alf) Van Cooten and later led by Mr Trevor Whitby, who proudly managed the store for an incredible 46 years. His passion for people and commitment to quality helped shape Van Cooten’s into the iconic destination it is today.

Today, the store is owned and operated by Carl & Vicki Nielsen, a local family who proudly continue the Van Cooten’s legacy — honouring its history while bringing fresh energy, new ranges and a genuine love for the community.

Meet the Nielsens

Carl and Vicki have lived on the Fraser Coast for many years and instantly connected with the heritage and heart behind the business. Their vision is simple:
to create a warm, welcoming space filled with creativity, colour, quality and connection.

You’ll often find their kids helping in-store, Carl chatting with customers about a new project, or Vicki sharing her favourite fabrics of the week.

At Van Cooten’s, you’re not just a customer - you’re part of the family.

A Store Built on Community

Van Cooten’s has always been about more than fabric and products.
It’s about conversations at the counter.
It’s about customers showing us their finished quilts.
It’s about supporting local makers, schools and travellers discovering our little town for the first time.

We love being part of the Fraser Coast’s story - and we’re grateful for every person who walks through our doors.
